Silverstein Leads
DSO Concerts

Conductor/violinist Joseph
Silverstein leads and per-
forms with the Detroit Sym-
phony Orchestra in perfor-
mances of Vaughan Williams'
"The Lark Ascending,"
Stravinsky's "Pulcinella
Suite" and Mozart's
"Serenade No. 9 (Posthorn)"
for the final Chamber Series
concerts of the season 8 p.m.
March 30 and 3:30 p.m. April
1 at Orchestra Hall.
Silverstein has been music
director of the Utah Sym-
phony since 1983 and assum-
ed the post of music director
of the Chautauqua Symphony
in 1986. A native of Detroit,
Silverstein spent three
seasons as a violinist with the
Houston Symphony, one with
the Philadelphia Orchestra,
and one season as concert-
master and assistant conduc-
tor of the Denver Symphony.
He joined the Boston Sym-
phony in the fall of 1955,
became concertmaster in
1961, and soon after was
named assistant conductor.
Presently he is artistic ad-
viser to the Boston Universi-
ty Tanglewood Institute and
music director of the
American Federation of Musi-
cians Congress of Strings.

Orchestra Plays
Days Hotel

The Days Hotel/Southfield
Convention Center, will
feature the Scandinavian
Symphony Orchestra led by
guest conductor Dai Uk Lee
8 p.m. March 31.
The performance is a 60th
anniversary benefit to sup-
port the Scandinavian Sym-
phony Orchestra and it in-
cludes light classical selec-
tions by Brahms, Bizet,
Rossini, Copeland, and other
favorite composers.

'Matchmaker'
Set To Open

Matchmaker Dolly Levi on-
ly pretends to promote the
marriage of Horace
Vandergelder to New York
milliner Mrs. Molloy while
actually pursuing the
wealthy Vandergelder for
herself in the comedy The
Matchmaker, which opens
April 6 at Henry Ford
Museum Theater. The show
runs through May 13.
