A

s a Reconstructionist
rabbi, I constantly
feel the tension of liv-
ing in two civilizations. As an
American and as a Jew, I see
conflicts between living in
American society and practic-
ing the Jewish religion.
The definition of
Reconstructionism is that
Judaism is the evolving
religious civilization of the
Jewish people. I think that
definition provides an ex-
cellent model for us to discuss
the first portion in the Book
of Leviticus. It has always
been a section that has had
special meaning to me as I
have tried to deal with being
Jewish and being a baseball
player. Let me explain.
In Hebrew, the name of the
Book of Leviticus is Torat

Rabbi Bruce Aft is director of
the Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies and principal
of the community Jewish
High School of the Agency for
Jewish Education.

Kohanim and deals with the
teachings of the laws of the
priests. The word Leviticus is
derived from the Greek and
means pertaining to the
Levites. Much of the Book of
Leviticus deals with the ritual
of sacrificial worship. The
chapters in the first portion of
Leviticus, which make up our
portion this week, deal with
the sacrifices we were asked
to make in the days of the
Bible.
My first contact with mak-
ing sacrifices came when I
was on a little league baseball
team and was asked to bunt
to move runners from either
first to second or second to
third. I also loved to keep
score at baseball games and
knew that if a player hit a fly
ball that was caught and a
runner advanced a base, it
was considered a sacrifice fly.
What did this mean to me
as a child growing up? What
it meant to sacrifice was to
help out the team. Often a
player would be asked to hit
the ball to the right side of
the infield to move a runner
from one base to another.
These sacrifices were always
