314 Consecutive Weeks

INSTANT LIQUIDITY

Public 'Defiant,'
Rabbis Told

New York (JTA) — Some
100 newly ordained rab-
binical students were told
last week that "a rabbi's
concern must radiate beyond
himself," and that they
"must never fall prey to the
comfortable" but
"scandalous notion that the
term 'dal Yisroel' is re-
stricted to only those who do
and think as we do."
The remarks were made
last week by Dr. Norman
Lamm, president of Yeshiva
University, in an address
before the rabbinical
graduates at the Rabbi Isaac
Elchanan Theological Semi-
nary.
The formal ceremony
marked the first time that
graduates in the smicha
program completed the new-
ly required fourth-year pro-
gram of study in halacha
l'ma'aseh (practical law).
The program focuses on
issues such as medical and
business ethics, the envi-
ronment and abortion.
"To be genuine and effec-
tive Torah leaders, you must
be ready to emerge from the
warm and nurturing"
yeshiva "into the
tumultuous, frustrating,
often false and defiant public
arena," Lamm said.
Lamm said a rabbinic
leader who refuses to emerge
from his shul or school, but
is satisfied to be a rabbi only
inside, "is not a full rabbi,
and he certainly is not and
cannot be a leader."

Summer-Time
Blues Surfacing

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Secular
Israelis are protesting be-
cause the Orthodox-
controlled Interior Ministry
has tailored daylight-saving
time this year for the conve-
nience of the observant
minority.
Summer time, which
allows an extra hour of
daylight, will be in effect for
154 days, slightly longer
than in past years, but
shorter than in the United
States and Europe.
It will begin on March 24
and end on Aug. 25 to ac-
commodate Orthodox Jews
who otherwise would have to
wait to a late hour to recite
Selichot, the prayers that
precede the High Holy Days.
