But in Syria, Carter had
been silent about what
Rosenthal called that coun-
try's "record of execution,
torture, imprisonment of its
own citizens ... " and of
Syria being, "year after
year, ... [the] host, trainer
and paymaster to one of the
murderous gangs of ter-
rorists on earth — the Pop-
ular Front for the Liberation
of Palestine, General Com-
mand."
"All you get is a pained
look" if you criticize Israel
while in Jerusalem, said
Rosenthal. "Try denouncing
the government in Syria or
Iraq and you never get back."
