wish without regard to their

But they said recent
statements by top U.S. offi-
cials "could raise doubts
about our long-standing
commitment to the right of
Jews to live in East
Jerusalem."
The six other lawmakers
who signed the letter were
Sens. Alfonse D'Amato
(R-N.Y.); Joseph Lieberman
(D-Conn.); Connie Mack (R-
Fla.); John McCain (R-Ariz.);
Larry Pressler (R-S.D.); Pete
Wilson (R-Calif.); and Rep.
Benjamin Gilman (R-N.Y.).
The letter was mild com-
pared to statements made on
the House floor last week
during a one-hour "special
order" free-for-all devoted to
East Jerusalem.
The session, spearheaded
by Rep. Edward Feighan (D-
Ohio), saw lawmakers con-
testing the U.S. positions
that East Jerusalem is oc-
cupied territory and that its
final status should be
resolved in Arab-Israeli
negotiations.
Some argued that Bush
may have torpedoed current
peace prospects with his
March 3 comment. Others
called on Bush to recognize
Jerusalem as Israel's capital
and move its embassy there
from Tel Aviv.

Koch to a museum which
has become one of his pet
projects.

but will address Jewish life
and culture in Europe and
Asia before World War II,
the development of Jewish
life in the United States, and
Jewish contributions to
