xcept for some interior
work, Temple Israel's
new building addition
is almost complete.
Temple Administrator Eva
Shapiro said work on the ad-
dition's exterior has been
finished, but interior walls
must be painted and fur-
niture ordered for the new
rooms. Landscaping will be
done later this spring.
"It's still a hard hat area,"
Shapiro said about the con-
struction. work. "But we're
working on the finishing
touches in the next couple of
months."
The new $3 million con-
struction and renovation
project began last summer.

the first level, a courtyard, a
youth wing and a tutoring
center on the lower level.
Late last year, renovations
in the chapel and some
classrooms as well as repairs
to a leaking roof were com-
pleted.
Although the addition is
not finished, Temple Israel
is taking reservations for
late summer events in the
chapel and new social hall.
The hall is expected to ac-
commodate weddings and
bar mitzvah celebrations up
to 175 people.
The 12 new classrooms
will be ready this fall,
Shapiro said. With the addi-
tion, cloakrooms and stages
no longer have to be used for
classes.
Shapiro hopes to expand
Temple Israel's adult edu-
cation classes and commun-
ity programs such as
Alcoholics Anonymous.
"Now we can have a Sun-
day adult education class
while the children are in
school," Shapiro said.
Despite the additional
class space, the temple will
continue to use Green
Elementary School and Or-
chard Lake Middle School
for religious classes and pro-
grams, Shapiro said.
Plans to build the addition
began two years ago. Since
moving to the Walnut Lake
Road location in 1980, Tem-
ple Israel has grown to 2,200
members and added more
community orientated pro-
grams. ❑
