Tucked away in a tiny niche bet- ween Avi's Auto Care Center and the Vineyards Deli in Farmington Hills is the new art gallery, Route 10 (Just look for it behind the rose- colored door.) The gallery may be small, but co-owners Terri Shapiro and Doree Schwartz have big plans for the Route 10, which opened Feb. 1. Those familiar with area art galleries may know Shapiro and Schwartz from the Homestead, a Walled Lake gallery they operated last year. A step rent increase there caused the two to start looking for "a great new loca- tion," Shapiro says. They're sure they've found it now in the Middlebelt- Northwestern area, which is fast becoming known as "gallery row." The Posner Gallery is located across the street from Route 10 and several other popular galleries are nearby. We're very excited about our new home," Schwartz says. Then one afternoon, while driving near her home in the Walled Lake area, Shapiro happened upon a 150-year- old historic home on the lakeshore with a "For Lease" sign in the front yard. "The house just rang bells for me when I saw it," Shapiro says. "I was in the Orient at the time on business," Schwartz recalls. "And when I got home, I got this message from Terri: 'I've found our art gallery!!' " Not long after, the two friends opened the Homestead Gallery of Con- temporary Art, where their specialty would prove to be showings of the work of area artists, often to benefit charities like the Michigan Cancer Foundation or the Juvenile Diabetes Association. They intend to continue
