waitress noticed Sam's
discomfort . . . "I know what's
bothering you," she
whispered. "The boss bought
those trucks at a salvage sale.
He figures they bring in more
customers than an electric
sign. There aren't even any
motors in them."

REMEMBER WHEN .. .

dancing was something a guy
and gal did together?
I ONCE HAD the privilege,
of watching a great French
chef prepare a salad dressing
. . . He'd made it countless
times and was world famous
for it . . . But I noticed that
after he'd add a dash of this
and a pinch of that, he'd taste
the dressing, then add a little
more of one ingredient or
another . . . To a person
geared to standard pro-
cedures, this seemed pretty
hit-and-miss . . . Why, I asked,
didn't he write down the
recipe long ago and simply
follow it? . . . His answer was
a gem . . . "Because how do I
know it can't taste better?"
WHEN YOU want to add a
party touch to corn on the cob,
try onion or chive butter or
margarine . . . Add to soft but-
ter or margarine salt, pepper
and finely minced green
onions or chives . . . Let stand
for an hour or longer.
THIS GUY was standing
in a bar one afternoon having
a quick drink, when a horse
walked in and stepped up to
the bar . . . The horse said to
the bartender, "Give me a dry
martini" . . . The bartender
said, "Okay," and started to
mix it . . . The guy was dumb-
founded . . . fascinated . . . a
horse at a bar! . . . He couldn't
believe his eyes . . . The
bartender finished mixing
the drink and set it down in
front of the horse and said,
"Here ya are. Here's your
martini" . . . The horse said,
"Wait a minute. Where's the
olive?" . . . The bartender
said, "Oh, I'm sorry. Here's
your olive" . . . The horse said,
"That's better," drank the
martini, paid for it and left
. . . The guy said, "Wow!
That's strange!" . . . "Oh, no,"
said the bartender. "I often
forget the olive."
OVERHEARD . . . at
Mark Stephen's Steak Fac-
tory, "A bachelor is a man
with no ties except those that
need pressing" . . . at Jane's
Place, "My wife is so lazy,
she's the only one I know who
washes dishes in bed."
SO MUCH skill and trou-
ble go into the making of
champagne, it deserves our
best consideration . . . Serve it
