mitzvah h eroes t 0 our readers: Danny Siegel, who seeks them out and generates support for causes they advance, defines a Mitzvah Hero as one who lives a life "suffused with good works, and who is admirable for all of the good things he or she does!' When The Jewish News launched its initial search for Mitzvah Heroes in 1988, we were overwhelmed by the high-quality, low-profile work being done that touched Jews and non-Jews throughout the metropolitan Detroit area. A special eight-page Mitzvah Heroes supplement appeared in the February 3, 1989, Jewish News highlighting the extraordinary good deeds of Chuck Pearlstein, Faye Isackson, Bessie Chase and Louis Kay. Several thousand additional copies of the supplement have been distributed throughout North America, many by Siegel. Today's special supplement reflects the results of a new search for Mitzvah Heroes in our midst. And while the good deeds of Rae Ann Rae Sharfman 68 FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 1990 Sharfman, Jeff Lazar and Dorothy Goldberg are truly extraordinary, they were selected from another large and diverse batch of qualified can- didates whom you, our readers, nominated. We are fortunate, and enriched, to live and work in a corn- munity with so many performing in- spirational acts of kindness, with lit- tle fanfare. Selection of this year's Mitzvah Heroes was by a committee compris- ed of Assistant Editor Elizabeth Ap- plebaum, who coordinated the project; Mrs. Chase, a previous Mitzvah Hero; Rabbi Avraham Jacobovitz of Machon L'Torah; Rabbi Harold Loss of Temple Israel; and Jewish News Associate Publisher Arthur Horwitz. Additional copies of Mitzvah Heroes can be obtained by contacting Ms. Applebaum at 354-6060. May the efforts of these Mitzvah Heroes inspire us to perform addi- tional good deeds. Arthur M.
