Dallas (JTA) — Five mem-
bers of a white supremacist
group were convicted last
week of firearms violations
and conspiracy to violate the
civil rights of blacks, Jews
and Hispanics.
The charges carry a max-
imum penalty of 25 years in
federal prison. Sentencing is
scheduled for April 19.
The charges stem from an-
ti-Semitic and anti-minority
incidents committed in 1988,
in which several religious
institutions were vandalized
and several people were
beaten up by skinheads.
Those found guilty of 12 of
13 charges in Federal Court
were Daniel Wood, 19; Sean
Tarrant, 20; Jon Jordan, 19;
Christopher Greer, 25; and
Michael Lawrence, who
were convicted before U.S.
District Judge Barefoot
Sanders.
The five are members of
the Confederate Hammer-
skins, a Dallas-based white
supremacist organization,
whose members shave their
heads and espouse Nazi ide-
ology.
The convictions are based
on several incidents. In
August 1988, anti-Semitic
slogans were painted on
Temple Shalom in Dallas,
and several skinheads at-
tempted to disrupt Shabbat
services.
Temple Shalom was van-

dalized eight to 10 times in
less than two years.
In October, the Dallas
Jewish Community Center
had several windows shot
out, and phrases like "six
million more," and "this
time we'll do it right" were
painted on its walls in red
spray-paint. An Islamic
mosque was also defaced.
As a result of those in-
cidents, several suspects
were apprehended, and
Daniel Wood was convicted
in a local court of vandalism.
He received a sentence of 10
years and a $5,000 fine.
Upon his sentencing, Wood
flashed the "Heil Hitler"
sign to a packed courtroom.
Wood and several other
skinheads had been stopped
by police while driving in a
van, loaded with baseball
bats, ball bearings and cans
of red spray paint.
In one of the most chilling
pieces of testimony, Gordan
Buchanan, 18, a former
member of the Confederate
Hammerskins, testified that
Wood said he wanted to run
lethal gas through the air
conditioning ducts of a local
synagogue.
Though no gas had been
put in any of the air units, a
spokesman at Temple
Shalom of Dallas confirmed
that the air conditioning had
been tampered with on two
separate occasions.

Canadian Anti-Semitism
Rises; Abortion Blamed

Montreal (JTA) — Anti-
abortionists promulgating a
new version of the ancient
blood libel against Jews is
one of three factors cited for
a 57 percent rise in the
number of anti-Semitic in-
cidents reported in Canada
last year.
According to Dr. Stephen
Scheinberg, a professor of
history at Concordia Uni-
versity in Montreal, the
other factors are the
skinhead phenomenon and
the Alberta appeals court's
reversal of the 1985 convic-
tion of former high school
teacher Jim Keegstra for
preaching anti-Semitism in
his classroom.
Scheinberg, who is chair-
man of B'nai B'rith
Canada's Quebec chapter,
said there were 176 anti-
Semitic incidents across
Canada in 1989 compared to
112 in 1988.

A virulent anti-Semitic
campaign is directed against
Dr. Henry Morgentaler, a
Polish-born Jewish physi-
cian and Auschwitz survivor
who is in the forefront of the
movement for government
funding of abortions for poor
women.
"The anti-abortionists re-
fer to abortions as the 'real
Holocaust,' thus demeaning
the suffering of our people
during the Nazi era,"
Scheinberg said. "The anti-
abortionists blame Jews for
plotting to kill Christian
babies through abortions."
Publicity surrounding the
Jim Keegstra case, which is
now before the Canadian
Supreme Court on appeal by
the Canadian Jewish Con-
gress and B'nai Brith
Canada, is also responsible
for the rise in anti-Semitism
sentiment in Canada, the
professor said.
