RABBI RICHARD HERTZ
Special to The Jewish News
T
his week's double
sedra concludes the
reading from the
Torah of the Book of Exodus,
which by now had firmly
established the identity of the
Jewish people. Some believe
that the Exodus was the most
important historical event in
Jewish history, for it shaped
a national consciousness
unknown to the slaves who
came out of Egypt.
The book ends with a
description of how the
laborious work of building a
sanctuary in the wilderness
was to be done. Punctiliously,
all the precise specifications
laid down in earlier chapters
of Exodus had now been car-
ried out. The tabernacle was
to be the place where God
could be served. It transferred
the Divine Presence from
Sinai to a moveable structure

that was to accompany the
people on their journeys. The
tabernacle was now ready to
be used. Then Scripture says,
"The cloud covered the tent of
meeting and the glory of the
Lord filled the tabernacle."
(Ex. 40:39)
What could this mean?
Since God is not a corporeal
being and apparently was ab-
sent during the years of
enslavement, is God now pre-
sent? Would He lead His peo-
ple to the Promised Land?
The spiritual manifestation of
God's presence was to be in
the tabernacle. Still the ques-
tion arose, how could God's
presence and the glory of God
be in the tabernacle? The an-
cient rabbis had a word for it.
They called the presence of
the glory of God the
Shekinah.
Shekinah is a very difficult
word to define. A talmudic
story may illustrate its con-
cept. The ancient Roman
emperor, Hadrian, once told
Rabbi Joshua ben Hanania,
"I want to see your God." It
was a time when the Romans
