Solar Sales, Inc
- Since 1969 —
new membership
campaign is targeting
Reform Jews in the
Detroit area to put their
money and numbers in sup-
port of Israel.
ARZA — the American
Reform Zionist Association
— has formed a Detroit
council that has met twice
since the beginning of the
year. It has representation
from temples Kol Ami, Shir
Tikva, Shir Shalom, Beth El,
Emanu-El and Israel. It
plans ARZA Sabbaths at
area temples and will bring
in a national speaker next
year.
Detroit area Jews, says
ARZA national board and
Temple Israel member
Judith Miller, give money to
Israel through the Jewish
Welfare Federation. Reform
Jews must also show support
through Reform programs,
she says.
"People who believe in
freedom of religion for all
Jews need to support ARZA.
It ties one Jew to another in
the good times and the bad.
Those who are not ultra-
Orthodox, who are not part
of Rabbi (Menachem
Mendel) Schneerson
(Lubavitch), must also speak
out," she says.
"We want people to write
the U.S. government in sup-
port of Israel. We want peo-
ple to write to the Israel
government about the Law
of Return — you know that
battle will start again.
"We want people to travel
to Israel and support it with
their money, their mouth,
their letters and their
bodies."
In Israel, ARZA has estab-
lished two communities in
the desert north of Eilat, 18
synagogues throughout the
country, kindergartens and
the Israel Religious Action
Center. IRAC has been
standing up for Reform and
Conservative Jews in the
Israeli courts, including bat-
tling for cemetery rights and
the right of Reform rabbis to
perform religious
ceremonies.
Until recently, Reform
Jews have been forced by
Orthodox rulings to be
buried in shrouds, but IRAC
went to court and won a
decision allowing burials in
caskets. The movement has
also purchased its own
cemetery in the Jerusalem
area.
It has lobbied the Jewish
Agency to allocate more
funds to programs operated
by Reform institutions in
Israel. Last year, the Agency
allocated $1.6 million — 0.5
percent of its budget — to
Reform, but is six months
behind in its payments.
Despite these battles, sup-
port of Israel is ARZA's
main concern, says Miller.
The organization promotes
trips to Israel and essay con-
tests about Israel.
"Only 10-15 percent of
American Jews ever go to

Israel," says Miller.
"Reform must be more than
just an American Judaism.
But if people don't go to
Israel, they won't under-
stand how vulnerable Israel
is.
"Ramallah and Nablus are
just around the corner. You
can drive Israel's length in
five hours and across its
waist in half an hour.
"I've been going to Israel
every summer since 1976
and I've never seen an in-
tifada. I want people to get
on the planes and see for
themselves. If they don't go,
they'll never under-
stand." ❑
