Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Israeli daily newspaper
Ma'ariv plans to publish a
Russian-language daily to
provide news to the great in-
flux of Soviet Jews, accor-
ding to Hatzofeh, the news-
paper of the National Re-
ligious Party.
The venture will be funded
by British media tycoon
Robert Maxwell, who has al-
ready bought an interest in
Ma'ariv, Hatzofeh reported.
The editor of the new daily
will reportedly be Eduard
Kuznetsov, a former
refusenik. Kuznetzov served
nine years of a sentence that
was commuted from death to
life imprisonment to 15
years in Soviet labor camps
in trying to hijack a plane
from Leningrad to get to
Israel.
Kuznetsov, a writer and
broadcaster who has been
employed by Radio Liberty
for many years, now lives
and works in Munich, West
Germany.
In another media devel-
opment here, left-wing
editor Uri Avneri has sold
the remaining half of his sal-
ty weekly Haolam Hazeh.
