The exhibition will then begin a year-long tour under the Statewide Services Pro- gram of the DIA. Smith became interested in Staffordshire figurines as a young man employed at the Museum of the City of New York from 1933 to 1951. In 1951 he became director of the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle. From 1953 to his retirement in 1975, the Grosse Pointe resi- dent was librarian at the Henry Ford Museum in Dear- born. He pursued his quest for Staffordshire figurines un- til the end of his life, acquir- ing a variety of subjects at auction and through dealers both in the United States and abroad. His bequest to the Detroit Institute of Arts in- cluded 110 Staffordshire figurines. Featured at this year's show are artists from southeast Michigan. Warren Exhibit At Somerset Charles W. Warren will host an exhibition, The Lalique Crystal Collection, 7 p.m. March 16 and 17 at Somerset Mall in Troy. Marie-Claude Lalique, granddaughter of the founder, will make her first and only appearance in Michigan this year. She will sign new purchases. Three generations have gone into shaping Lalique over the last century. It all began with Rene Lalique in the late 1800s when he started his career as an ap- prentice jeweler in Paris. He revolutionized jewelry design of the period, and by 1900 had established himself as a primary architect of the Art Nouveau movement. `Art Poetry' At DIA Art Poetry Melodrama: 20 Years of the Alternative Press will open at the Detroit In- stitute of Arts through May 6. The work of Ken and Ann Mikolowski is celebrated in this 10th exhibition of the Ongoing Michigan Artists Program (OMAP). On view will be broadsides, artists' postcards, bookmarks, bumper stickers, books and early "Free Poems," all pro- duced on their small indepen- dent press. One-Man Show In Birmingham Edward Levine, a Michigan resident, sets a one-man show featuring recent oil paintings at Xochiopilli Gallery of Bir- mingham. It will run through March 31. Prominent in the exhibit are colorful oil paintings of Native Americans in ethnic costumes juxtaposed with ur- ban settings.
