AUG. 26, 1977 ... "The question raised in your col- umn by Bernice Robinson, `What is the real meaning of the term, mezzuza?' deserves an answer. The world mez- zuza means doorpost. The Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4-9) teaches us the basis of our faith: 'Hear 0 Israel. The Lord Our God. The Lord is One.' This portion ends with the commandment, 'You shall write them upon the door- posts of your house and on your gates.' A scholar explains an ancient commandment. "A mezuzza, therefore, as the Code of Jewish law states, is a piece of parchment on which this portion from the Torah together with Deuteronomy 11:13-21 has been handwritten by a scribe, using a quill, in the same manner that a Torah is writ- ten. The time to properly write this, on the average, is between two and three hours. The cost of the mezzuza will vary, based on the quality of parchment and the skill of the scribe. "Since it is impractical to put this parchment directly on the doorpost, a cover can be purchased to properly house the mezuzza scroll. The mezzuza is neither a good luck token, nor does it have any direct bearing to the Ten Commandments, other than its proclaiming the message of the First Commandment, 'I am the Lord Your God . . : " Avrom Borenstein . . . 1975 7, FEB. "Finishing his day's toil last week, cab driver Mark Rosen found a large box on the back seat of his hack . . . Luckily enough, the address was writ- ten on the outside and it not being too far from where he lived in Southfield, Mark decided to take it there .. . The woman who answered the door turned out to be the wife of a fellow cab driver .. . and so Mark accepted an in- vite to come in the house for a moment . . . No sooner had he entered the family room when the walls sprang to life with 'Surprise!' . . . Mark had delivered his own birthday cake to his own birthday party!" DEC. 2, 1977 ... "Hank Baskin, now attorney for the stars in local land, recently almost took John Kelly's job away when he subbed for his client on WXYZ-TV's 'Kelley & Co.' early morning talk show. "Hank's mom, Gladys (Max), says he used to make a microphone out of a stick and do Walter Winchell's famed 'Good Evening Mr. & Mrs. North America and all the ships at sea' bit, among others, when Henry was 10 years old. "Hank is a fine attorney and a swell guy . . . Those who've seen him on televi- sion, though, can't imagine him not being in the star spotlight himself . . . and he's really that good." AUG. 15, 1975 ... "What we need is another Northland Playhouse or the likes of the fine theater in the round .. . Producer Kenny Schwartz had some very good shows with names that put all others to shame . . . Movie star James Coburn was a resi- dent actor here at Northland before going to Hollywood. "There were good times both front and backstage .. . A classic was when Keefe 'Ed- die Cantor Story' Brasselle did 'The Tender Trap' . . . A fish was used in every perfor- mance . . . Not understanding it to be a prop, the fish man, instead of sending out a whole one had fillets delivered instead . . . The en- tire company worked over- time stapling the pieces together . . . On stage, when Keefe opened the box contain- ing it for his bit, he said the fish looked like 'riveted lox'." JAN. 10, 1958 ... "When Eleanor Riseman finally keeps her word and retires as director of the annual Infants Service Group shows, there's no doubt but what a plaque will probably be hung up with her famous last words, 'This is definitely my last year' .. . She started saying it back in 1949 in her 14th year as director." FEB. 20, 1976 ... "Client of barrister Mort Eskin ask- ed his wife, 'For our anniver- sary, would you rather have a mink coat or a trip to Sweden?' . . . 'Let's go to Sweden,' the wife replied. 'I understand mink coats are much cheaper there than here." " 0 • • • POACHED NORWEGIAN SALMON WITH DICED RED ONIONS, CAPERS AND TOMATOES NOVA LOX.
