Invites You To Enjoy .. .

"He went on to an Academy
Award nomination (for Out of
Africa)," Burnstein says. "And
I went into the toilet."
But the two remained in
contact, and Leudtke soon
helped Burnstein move in a
different direction. "He pulled
me aside at a party one night
and said, 'You ever think
about writing something bas-
ed on your experience
teaching Shakespeare to
soldiers?' "
Leudtke convinced Burns-
tein to write the story as a big-
screen movie and optioned the
script, even before Burnstein
began writing it.
For several years, Burnstein
worked on the two projects,
the movie, Renaissance Man,
and the play, Learn to Fall.
Finally, Hollywood luck
went Burnstein's way. His se-
cond agent, 'Ibm Bergesen, left
the business, but recommend-
ed Burnstein to the head of
the agency, Stuart Robinson.
Robinson agreed to represent
Burnstein.
"Talk about life becoming
easier," Burnstein says. "He's
the guy who sold E.T. It's no
accident that '89 is the best
year I ever had."
Last year, in addition to
Renaissance Man being op-
tioned by Fox, Learn to Fall
was optioned for a TV movie
and Burnstein was hired by
Michael Douglas' company to
write an adaptation screen
play.
" '89 was unbelievable.
Everything I threw up there
worked. Made a lot of money.
I'm working with the studio.
This is great fun. You get a lit-
tle nervous; are you going to
be able to sustain this?" But
as long as things go well, he
says, "I'll stay here in
Plymouth and write them and
go out there and have the
meetings?'
Burnstein will continue
writing for both stage and
screen. Although movies pay
much better, Burnstein notes
that "to the writer, there is
real dignity in theater. If I ask
you who wrote Death of a
Salesman, you know (Arthur
Miller).
Much of Burnstein's writing
is colored by his Jewish
background. Both Be My
Guest and Learn to Fall are
about Jewish families. He says
he would love to write a script
for "The Ten Command-
ments," as he puts it, "done
right."
Burnstein explains, "I teach
a philosophy and ethics
course. I really, really never
had the appreciation for the
Bible as literature until I had
to teach it. Those are the two
inspirations: Shakespeare and
the Torah."
