THE 5 CUPS OF WINE
THE FOUR
CUPS OF WINE
Passover celebrates the liberation of
the Jewish people from the physical and
mental bondage of Egypt. We rejoice
with our friends and our families over the
broken chains that enslaved our ancestry
as well as the shredding of the iron
curtain we are witnessing today. The
four cups of wine symbolize the spiritual
birth, the physical salvation and the
personal emancipation of people, who
with the hand of G-d marched toward
Sinai, freedom and the beginning of a
holy nation.
Our sages equate the four cups of wine with the four-fold promise of divine liberation;
V'HOTZETI AND I WILL BRING YOU OUT refers to the spiritual birth and the redemption from Egyptian
assimilation.
-
V'HITZALTY AND I WILL SAVE YOU from physical obliteration as a people and as a nation.
-
-
V'GOALTY AND I WILL REDEEM YOU the emancipation of body and soul, the mental and physical
elevation from slavery.
-
-
V'LOKACHTI AND I WILL TAKE YOU to be a holy nation with the Torah as your guide and your Faith as a
beacon of light through history.

THE FIFTH CUP OF WINE
Elijah's cup - the cup of the future - the forerunner of the Messiah - the chain of freedom strengthened by each
generation as we link the past to the future at the seder table. Elijah's cup represents the final emancipation and the
promise of world peace and global harmony.
