Temple Beth El and the Midrasha are offering a course "Back to the Basics: What Can a Jew Believe," be- ing taught by Rabbi Joseph Gutmann. Rabbi Gutmann is an art history professor at Wayne State University. The course will be an introduction to Judaism and explore Jewish beliefs in God and the role of Torah. Judaism Program For Soviets Set Machon L'Torah, The Jewish Learning Network of Michigan, will introduce a Jewish educational program for newly arrived Russian immigrants. The project, called "The Bar-Mitzvah Project," will of- fer a three-month learning program and will cover basic Jewish information such as: the Jewish calendar, holidays, religious articles, synagogue rituals and basic Hebrew. This program is supported by a grant from the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit. The first session will take place at 3 p.m. March 18 at the Jewish Community Center Jimmy Prentis Morris Building in Oak Park. Adat Shalom Pupils Travel To New York Adat Shalom Synagogue confirmation students will travel to New York City March 16-18 for a tour of the Jewish highlights and other city sights including the Jewish Theological Seminary, several synagogues, and the Lower East Side. The 23 students will be ac- companied by Rabbi Elliot Pachter and the Youth Department Director Miriam Starkman. Barnea To Lead Intifada Discussion The Midrasha will present Nahum Barnea, Detroit Zionist Federation's scholar- in-residence, 2 p.m. March 18, as part of the "Sundays at the Midrasha" program. He will speak about "The Intifada: Has It Had an Effect on the Day to Day Life of the Average Israeli?" Barnea is a journalist and political colum- nist of Yediot Aharanot. The Morris and Sarah Friedman Annual Lecture on Yiddish Language and Culture will be held at 2 p.m. April 29. Eugene Orenstein, associate professor of the Department of Jewish Studies, McGill University in Montreal, will speak on "Women's Voices in Yiddish Poetry."
