London (JTA) — Israel
should talk to Palestinians
outside the administered
territories and should be
prepared to give up addi-
tional land for peace, Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher
told Jewish leaders last
week.
The problems in the Mid-
dle East "would become still
worse if Israel settled Jews
from the Soviet Union in the
occupied territories," the
prime minister warned in an
address to the Board of
Deputies of British Jews.
Thatcher's 30-minute
speech included an assess-
ment of the situation of Jews
in the Soviet Union and her
view of German reunifica-
tion.
It was also nearly ecstatic
in its praise of the qualities
of British Jewry and was
received in kind by the
Anglo-Jewish leaders, many
of whom may not have
agreed with her formula for
Middle East peace.
"Israel needs to talk to
representatives of the Pales-
tinian people from inside the
occupied territories and from
outside," Thatcher said.
"That is the only way pro-
gress is going to be made and
a solution found to the tragic
situation in the occupied ter-
ritories, which is so hurtful
to Israel's reputation and
standing in the world."

No Holiday
Games Urged
In Wisconsin

Milwaukee (JTA) —
Wisconsin public high
schools will be urged not to
schedule interscholastic
sports on major Jewish holi-
days, according to an under-
standing recently reached
between Jewish groups and
the Wisconsin
Interscholastic Athletic
Association.
WIAA agreed to notify its
423 member schools and 48
member conferences of the
two days of Rosh Hashanah
as well as on Kippur and the
first two days of Passover.
WIAA Executive Director
Doug Chickering said he ex-
pected the schools and con-
ferences to voluntarily avoid
those dates in making their
schedules. WIAA "wouldn't
make it mandatory unless
we see a need for it," he add-
ed.
The sports association will
avoid the five designated
holy days in slating state
tournaments.
