Three major
English-lan-
guage Jewish
journalism ven-
tures — two in
Israel and one
in the United
States — are in
various stages of prepara-
tion. The two newspapers
and one news magazine are
set to appear within the next
four months and will be
staffed by some well known
figures, including Natan
Sharansky, the hero of the
Soviet Jewry movement.
A group of 28 former
editors and writers of the
Jerusalem Post who resigned
in January over policy dif-
ferences with publisher
Yehuda Levy seem well on
their way to creating their
own alternative English-
language daily in Israel.
The new paper, to be called
the Israel Times, will reflect
a more "left of center" posi-
tion than the newly
reconstituted Jeruslaem
Post, according to Charles
Hoffman. A former Post
reporter, Hoffman said the
Post, once the voice of the
Labor party, now has "a
shrill right wing editorial
policy that tries to in-
timidate rather than ra-
tionalize."
Hoffman will serve as
deputy editor of the new
paper. The editor will be
David Landau, another Post
veteran.
Hoffman was in the United
States seeking financial
support for the new venture,
which he estimates will re-
quire $5 million for its first
three years. Most of that
funding will be coming from
a European-based busi-
nessman, Edward Seroussi,
who read of the split at the
Post and contacted the
former staffers.
Though skeptics note that
the Post has a small daily
circulation of about 20,000,
indicating that the English-
reading audience in Israel is
too small to support two
dailies, Hoffman asserted
that the competititon may
increase the market.
An attempt two years ago
to start an English-language
alternative to the Post was
short-lived. The Nation,
published by Hesh Kestin,
was under-financed from the
outset, according to Hoff-
man, who said the new paper
will be "a quality publica-
tion."
The Israel Times could be
out within two months, he

added. There will be no
international edition, at
least initially.
Hirsh Goodman, former
military editor of the
Jerusalem Post, is planning
to edit another English-
language publication in
Israel as early as this
summer.
The Jerusalem Report is
planned as a weekly maga-
zine for high-brows, de-
scribed as a cross between
Time and the Economist of
London.
As a news weekly, the
magazine will include
reports from Israel, the
Mideast, the United States,
Europe and South America,
as well as a back-of-the-book
section on culture and the
arts.
Goodman, who left the
Post several years ago, has
gathered some well known
names in Israel, including
author-journalist Ze'ev
Chafets (our correspondent

The Forward
in English?

in Israel), who will serve as
managing editor, and Natan
Sharansky, who will head
the World desk.
Sharansky reportedly will
work part-time at the maga-
zine and continue his activist
work on behalf of Soviet
Jewry.
Financial backing,
estimated at $6 million for
the new magazine, will be
coming from Australian
businessman Robert Pratt,
who is Jewish but has never
been known for involvement
in Jewish affairs.
Perhaps the most intrigu-
ing new venture involves
transforming the Forward,
the once-powerful Yiddish
daily in New York, into a
national English-language
weekly, and ultimately a
daily.
Seth Lipsky, a former
editor of the international
edition of the Wall Street
Journal, is reportedly
preparing to begin publica-
tion within the next several
months. Though he has
refused, politely, to discuss
his plans, he has been hiring
key staff, including - J.J.
Goldberg of the Jewish
Week of New York and
David Twersky, a Mideast
analyst and writer.
Financial support is said to
be based on profits from the
sale of radio station WEVD
in New York, which is part
of the same group that owns
the Forward.
