Bolkosky Wins
Music Competition

The Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan
Detroit held its annual
Michigan Young Musicians
Competition on Feb. 4. It in-
cluded students from grades
7 through 12 for piano, violin
and cello.
The winners this year were
16-year-old Gabriel Bolkosky,
violinist, who won first prize.
The second-prize winner was
16-year-old Cameron Smith,
pianist. The third prize was
divided between 13-year-old
Caroline Burgunder, pianist,
and Yuko Okuda, 17-year-old
pianist.
These winners will appear
in concert 8 p.m. May 2 at the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield. There is no
admission charge.
Also, the Jewish Commu-
nity Center of Metropolitan
Detroit is continuing to ex-
pand its music department.
Annette Chajes, director of
music, has announced the ad-
dition of new teachers for the
Maple-Drake Building and
the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Branch.

Velvelettes
At Museum

The Velvelettes, an original
Motown group, will headline
Henry Ford Museum's "The
Sounds of Rock 'n' Roll,"
March 17 and 18.
The Velvelettes will take
the stage with their distinc-
tive sound and choreography
twice each day. Accompanied
by the Johnny Kidd Band,
they will perform their own
hits "Needle in a Haystack"
and "He Was Really Saying
Something" as well as chart-
busters by other famous
Motown groups. One of the
few surviving '60s "girl
groups" comprised of all its
original members, The
Velvelettes are still recording
today.

Moscow Music

Dimitri Kitaienko conducts
the Moscow Philharmonic or-
chestra of the USSR with
guest violist Yuri Bashmet on
Detroit Symphony Orchestra
Hall's "Guest Orchestras
From Europe" series 8 p.m.
March 16.
Appearing at Orchestra
Hall as part of a United
States tour, Maestro
Kitaienko and the orchestra
perform Mussorgsky's Night
on Bald Mountain, Rachman-
inoffs Symphony No. 2, and
Bartok's Viola Concerto with
Mr. Bashmet.
