ed nice and that it was
difficult to pick a winner.
When the votes were
tabulated, it was the haman-
tash that claimed victory.
Brooke Gerber, 9, wore a
brown triangle, a costume
she designed herself. She
said of her decision to come
as a hamantash, "I was tired
of being Queen Esther."
Third-place winner Sarah
Mickelson, 3, wore a silky
pink dress. But under all
that elegance she stood
shoeless, her little toes wig-
gling in tights.

"I was just in the jumping
thing," Sarah explained,
pointing to the moon walk.
As Raggedy Ann, 5-year-
old Emily Feldman wore a
bright red wig made of yarn.
Her mom painted black dots
on her nose and pink on her
cheeks, she said.
But Emily was less for-
thcoming as to what Purim
treat she'd had the night
before.
"I forgot," she said.
"Hamantashen!" her
mother and sister cried in
unison.
As the carnival drew to a
close, children went up to
claim their prizes: there
were plastic dinosaurs and
stuffed animals and ther-
moses and small games.
The day was a great
success, according to "I'm 4
3/4 years old," Lauren.
Dressed as Queen Esther
in a purple top and striped
socks,- Lauren paused for a
moment when asked her last
name. "I'm not sure," she
said. "But I know there's an
S." (It's Studenberg).
Lauren, who won candy
and a ring covered with
hearts, said she couldn't
decide which of the events
she liked best.
"I did baseball and
basketball," she said. "And I
did the duck game, too. And
that's all." ❑
