'Moment' Pans
Woody Allen

H

e may be one of
America's most
celebrated film-
makers, but in his own eyes,
Woody Allen is nothing
more than "a second-rate
mind."
At least, that's what he
called his cerebral functions
in an article he wrote in the
last Tikkun. The pastiche of
six brief essays addressed
such Allen-esque concerns
as:
• Being a 10-year-old
dreidel hustler and moving
the stakes up from "four
cents, six cents, maybe a
dime." Young Woody had vi-
sions of turning pro and
playing for a hundred thou-
sand a game, traveling from
city to city with "my best
dreidel in a smart carrying
case . . . looking for action,
always taking care of my
precious manicured hand."
• Pondering why the
magazine publishing his ar-
ticle needs this line under its
title: "A Bimonthly Jewish
Critique of Politics, Culture
& Society." "Why a Jewish
critique? Or a gentile criti-
que? Or any limiting
perspective? Why not simply
a magazine with articles
written by human beings for
other humans to read?"

The portion of Woody's
rambling that has aroused
the most curiosity was his
explanation for writing a
condemnation of Israel's
handling of the intifada that
appeared on the New York
Times' op-ed page.
"The central point" of his
Times' piece, he wrote in
Tikkun, was "inescapable:
Israel was not responding
correctly to this new prob-
lem" by ordering its soldiers
to "go door-to-door and ran-
domly break the hands of
Palestinians."
In the current issue of his
magazine, Moment
publisher Hershel Shanks
asserts that Woody wrote for
the Times "not because of
your moral outrage, but be-
cause you were embarassed.
There is no surer cure for
embarrassment than Israel
bashing."
Doubtlessly, says Shanks,
Woody wrote because of
"moral outrage," something
that is "easy and released
tensions; sorting through
tough issues is hard and can
give you a headache."
"The real question,"
claims Shanks, is not
whether Woody
"exaggerated what Israel
was doing," but "why did
you say it, there and then?"
For that, Shanks offered
Woody the pages of Moment.
