SEDAN news and entertainment media and the "disporpor- tionate influence of Jews — for good or ill — on what we see on television or in the movies." He referred to Farrakhan's statements that Judaism is a "dirty religion" and that Hitler was "wickedly great" as "gratuitous," references which will be "interpreted as anti-Semitism." These kinds of articles as well as the silence make it quite clear that Farrakhan has been accepted by the black mainstream. ❑ I LOCAL NEWS I SPORT CPE. * $6825* $6225* $8825* $8225 2-DR. COUPE Bigotry breeds on the silence of good people and one day the black community will regret its ambivalence. The Michigan Chronicle editorial was followed by a column in the Detroit News by the black nationally syn- dicated writer, William Raspberry, an article which was equally disconcerting. Chronicle, Like the Raspberry walked a political tightrope, avoiding any outright criticism of Far- rakhan. What's more, he repeated the stereotypes of Jews — that they "wield tremendous influence" in the Editor's note: In today's society — where both mother and father are in the work force — there is a tremendous need for quality child care. The Jewish Community Center, which receives funds from the Jewish Welfare Federation's Allied Jewish Campaign, provides a child development center for area children. The following story, the last in a series, shows how contributions to the Campaign help the community. L aura Gould, an attor- ney from West Bloom- field knew that her children, David and Stephanie, loved attending the Jewish Community Center's Child Development Center. She knew they were involved in the program's many classes and special events. But even Gould was surpris- ed when Stephanie, age 3V2 came home one day and in- sisted on reciting the Shabbat prayers. "She did them perfectly," Gould said. That's because the Child Development Center, based in the Maple-Drake Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield, pays as much at- tention to Jewish heritage as it does to learning and social skills. That the day-care facility also provides loads of fun for the children is a given. Supported by funds provid- ed by the Jewish Welfare Federation, the Child Development Program's three categories — infant/toddler, nursery and kindergarten — are specially staffed and designed to bring out the best in its young charges. All the programs run Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. In the infant/toddler class, children age 2 months through 2 1/2 years enjoy a con- sistency of routine that in- cludes free play, stories and songs, and artwork. The babies are fed, held, and given naps whenever they need it, and the staff is always on hand with diapers. For the toddlers, lunch and snacks are provided, all in a kosher atmosphere. Once the children graduate to nursery class, the 2 1/2-- to 5-year-olds thrive on social play, games to spark their im- agination, and activities to fine-tune motor skills. The kids get swimming lessons at the JCC pool, and also dive into cultural matters. The elder statesmen of the Child Development Center, the 5- to 6-year-old kindergarteners, get math and reading readiness, swim- ming and gymnastics, and such specialties as woodwork- ing, cooking and science. The kosher lunches and snacks all the children receive prepare them to celebrate their own Passover seder. Gould's son David, now 7, was among the first students of the Child Development Center. It's "done so much for my children when it comes to social and learning skills," she says. It's done something for Gould, too. "When I had David, I was a typical new mother — nervous. When I saw the notice about day care at JCC, I spent a day there and met the director. She and the whole staff gave me con- fidence. I have the utmost trust in them." ❑
