Next stop: a specialty store
called Conversation Piece,
situated at the other end of
the island from Old San Juan.
In La Galleria, an assortment
of chic boutiques in the lobby
level of the El San Juan hotel,
I pause to admire the varied
window displays.
But only Conversation
Piece has a window full of the
striking metal sculptures of
Frank Miesler. The artist,
born in Danzig and educated
in London, now works in
Israel and has a gallery in the
Old City of Jaffa. But
travelers to San Juan can buy
Meisler pieces in Wachtel's
specialty shop.
"His work has often been
presented as state gifts by
Israel's president and prime
minister," Wachtel says. She
first saw Meisler's work on
display in New York and pro-
mptly asked if she could
represent him in Puerto Rico.
Now she carries a selection
of Meisler's work that ranges
from intricate mezzot to
biblical figures. For Judaica
collectors, Wachtel also car-
ries the colorful ceramic
plates of Israeli ceramicist
Ruth Faktor. "And we can
hardly keep them in stock,"
she says,.lifting out one vivid-
ly colored plate. "I sold six of
these today."
As the last stop on my San
Juan jaunt, I go "shopping"
not for Judaica but for
cuisine. San Juan again sur-
prises me. Even though the
city has not a single kosher
restaurant, I find myself
ordering kosher roast chicken
in one of San Juan's most
elegant restaurants.
My window table at La
Rotisserie in the Caribe
Hilton Hotel overlooks the
hotel's tropical gardens. But
I'm also drawn to the view in
one corner of the restaurant,
where a cook is deftly
rotating steaks, seafood, and
chicken over an open fire.
One of those orders is mine.
When I see the entree on the
menu which reads, "Plump
whole kosher chicken Em-
pire," I can't resist. This is the
chance to try a traditional
staple in an entirely new
setting.
"Empire chicken is a long
tradition because our Jewish
clients requested it," explains
executive chef Mario Ferro,
who obligingly came out of
the kitchen — briefly — to
answer my queries. "And
when we tested it, we felt it
was good food, so we decided
to put it on the menu per-
manently."
