March 11 is when tryouts begin for the Detroit Mac- cabi Club, with winners of team berths also enjoying the distinction of being athlete-ambassadors to the world. August 19-26, Detroit will host the Jewish Community Centers-North American Maccabi Youth Games. Some 2,200 Jewish teens from the U.S. and 10 foreign countries will compete. Alan Horowitz, Maccabi team coordinator, said the Detroit team will total about 200 youngsters competing in 18 sports. "We encourage them to try out for more than one sport, specifically their first-choice sport and cross-country," said Horowitz. Cross-country will be on the final Sunday and will thus provide the least amount of scheduling conflict with other sports. There are two age divi- sions — 13-14 and 15-16 — in all but the four team sports: basketball, soccer, softball and volleyball, Horowitz said, and there are separate boys' and girls' teams in those sports. Only table tennis and chess are co-ed sports categories. Tryouts are scheduled in the five sports in which in- terest is expected to be heaviest — girls and boys basketball, racquetball, boys soccer and boys and girls softball. The other sports — girls soccer, golf, gym- nastics, chess, karate, swimming, table tennis, track and field/cross-country and wrestling and volleyball — will have team meetings, with tryouts held if needed. All but the wrestling coach have been selected for the Detroit team, according to Horowitz.
