Europe Trend
Helps Israel

The tidal wave of democ-
racy sweeping the Commu-
nist bloc "will significantly
change the equations" in the
Middle East, according to
Amos Perlmutter, a pro-
fessor of political science and
sociology at Washington,
D.C.'s, American Univer-
sity.
In a column in the Wash-
ington Times, Perlmutter
claims the "spirit and
movement of Soviet reform
directly affect[s] the Arab-
Israeli and the Israeli-
Palestinian conflicts. Arab
leaders might take some
cautionary warning from
events that have been
nothing less than revolu-
tionary, and by the infec-
tious spirit of democracy
now affecting people long
under the sway of
totalitarianism.
"Palestinians might take
note that democracy can be
achieved through negotia-
tion and accommodation, not
through the murder of its so-
called 'collaborators.' "
And, continued
Perlmutter, both Israel and
the Palestinians must real-
ize that they are "no longer
the heated focus of super-
power competition. Arab
leaders, the PLO and the Pa-
lestinians have . . . the op-
portunity to change their
basically undemocratic and
maximalist stances."

Are The Jews
Drifting Right?

Will the demise of Present
Tense magazine mean that
"the message emanating
from those who claim to
speak for American Jews
become even more lopsidedly
reactionary than it has
been?"
That's the prediction of
Erwin Knoll, editor of The
Progressive magazine, in The
Nation. For the last 17
years, says Knoll, Present
Tense has been a "modest,
soft-spoken counterpoint" to
the American Jewish Com-
mittee's other publication,
the conservative Commen-
tary. Or as Knoll tags it, the
"rebarbative, neoconser-
vative" Commentary.
(For those of us whose lex-
icographical acumen is not
up to Knoll's, Webster's New
World Dictionary defines
"rebarbative" as "repellent,
unattractive, forbidding,
grim.")
The AJComm recently an-
nounced that Present Tense
would fold at the end of
April. 0
