LOCAL NEWS I OLDSMOBILES FOR LESS 1990 CUTLASS CALAIS SEDAN Bar-Ilan Leader Asks Detroit Jews For Support SUSAN GRANT Staff Writer B ar-Ilan University's new national exec- utive vice president, Yehudah Halevy, stopped in Detroit this week to spread the word about the Israeli school. Halevy, who rose to the rank of brigadier general after 27 years in the Israeli army and spent the last six years as the worldwide Israel Bond Organization president, was appointed to his new position last month. He will be responsible for the university's activities in the United States. Halevy recognizes many Detroit residents are strong supporters of the university. While only a handful of area residents are graduates of Bar-Ilan, the 35-year-old university has received fi- nancial support from Jewish leaders here. "In Israel a lot of people respect the leadership of Detroit," Halevy said. "The Detroit campaign has given life to Bar-Ilan. Detroit and Bar-Han go together." Yet, Halevy would like to show more Detroit Jews what Bar-Ilan, with its 12,000 students, has to offer. He wants to convince sup- porters that contributing money to the university is good for them. He points to the research work Bar-Han has done in the medical field. A drug de- veloped by Bar-Ilan staff to treat Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is be- ing used in several coun- tries. The university also has developed an experi- mental device that can de- tect cancer earlier than thought possible. As part of his job, Halevy is working with American businesses interested in marketing Bar-Ilan's pro- ducts. Halevy also stressed the university's role in resettl- ing the 10,000 Soviet Jews who arrive each month in Israel. "They are desperately hungry for something Jew- ish. I do believe we have a major challenge to help these people." ❑ No Aliyah Is Planned For Cultural Center ALAN HITSKY Associate Editor O fficials of the Zionist Organization of America - Detroit District are emphatic: The Zionist Cultural Center on Ten Mile, west of Southfield Road, is not for sale. Rumors about the building have been spreading in re- cent months after the Sephardic Community of Greater Detroit made an un- solicited offer to purchase the facility. "We've been meeting there for 15 years," said Sephardi board member David Chicorel, "and we're interested in finding a place of our own." The Sephardic Community rents the cultural center for its annual high holiday ser- vices and rents a room at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah for Sunday morning services. ZOD officials were em- phatic that they have no plans to sell the building, which they purchased in 1965. A former church, the property originally contain- ed a house, which was sold and torn down to make way for an office building. Ezekiel Leikin, ZOD exec- utive director, said the building is maintained through income from rentals of its hall. Jewish organiza- tions which rent the facility on a regular basis include the B'nai B'rith Women's Council, Radomer Aid Socie- ty, the Mezeritcher organ- ization, and Einstein, Bloch and Louis-Marshall B'nai B'rith groups. The hall accommodates 150 persons and has a public address system and a stage. The building is operated by a separate corporation, whose officers are ZOD members Judge Ira Kauf- man, Dr. Alex Friedlaender, Richard Bloom, Sidney Silverman and David Dann. Leikin said the ZOD has been making voluntary con- tributions to the corporation in recent months to "take care of different things" after an income-producing rental of the parking lot ex- pired.
