JNF Loses
Major Lawsuit

Seattle (JTA) — A King
County Superior Court jury
has awarded $225,000 in
damages to the former exec-
utive director of the Seattle
office of the Jewish National
Fund in his discrimination
lawsuit against the agency.
Amitizia Guibbory, 56,
who alleged he was fired by
the JNF in 1986 after 12
years of service because he is
an Israeli, said he felt vin-
dicated by the jury's deci-
sion.
"I only wanted to clear my
name," Guibbory said after
the trial. "For them to fire
me and to say that I was in-
competent just wasn't fair."
The JNF maintained that
it fired Guibbory for lack of
productivity and poor fund-
raising abilities.
A defense witness, Dr.
Donald Sherrard, testified
that Guibbory's fund-raising
performance was
"outstanding" the first year
but afterward he was
"essentially non-
functional," spending
almost as much money as he
raised.
Henry Fields, Guibbory's
attorney, told the jury that
Cohen was being pressured
by the Israeli government to
fire Guibbory because it
didn't want emigres from
Israel working in executive
positions for the JNF, and he
complied.

Tel Aviv U.
Honors Reagan

Los Angeles (JTA) —
About 900 guests, including
some of Hollywood's biggest
names, were on hand at a re-
cent American Friends of
Tel Aviv University dinner,
when former President
Ronald Reagan received an
honorary doctorate degree
and gave his name to the
new Program for Interna-
tional Communications and
World Peace.
In his acceptance remarks,
Reagan said the United
States is firmly committed to
the security of Israel and
will stand by Israel's side
during the difficult peace
process in the Middle East.
TAU President Moshe
Many said one aim of the
Reagan Program is a bina-
tional think tank, "to foster
new guidelines for Israeli-
American relations in a
changing international era."
The 79-year-old former
president, who has been
riding the lecture trail since
leaving the White House,
received no honorarium.
