HOBBIES: Jogging, tennis, basketball, reading and children. 100 FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 1990 BACKGROUND: Michael Stein grew up in Oak Park with his parents Hyman and Miriam Stein and was graduated from Oak Park High School in 1968. "Oak Park is the greatest home community I've ever seen and I'm lucky to have grown up there," Stein says. He recalls having a lot of energy as a kid and always being active in sports. One highlight of his high school career was winning the school-wide Ping-Pong competition. When he was an adolescent, he enjoyed watching "Perry Mason" on television. "I really was inspired by watching him, but hopefully I have more reasoning. After he was graduated from Michigan State University with majors in economics and history, he attended law school at Georgetown University. After he received a law degree in 1975, he decided to continue his education at the London School of Economics. Stein found this experience intellectually stimulating, and it gave him the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. In the late 1970s Stein came back to Michigan to begin his law career. He started with the firm of Hertzberg, Jacob and Weingarden. In 1978 he met Heidi Ghafari and married her the following year. Stein admits his parents were skeptical because Heidi is Lebanese, older than he and had three children. Stein is especially proud of his wonderful family relationship. He states that he and his family support Jewish causes. "There is no Beirut in my household!' Stein and his wife have expanded Heidi's Salons from three Michigan salons to 35 salons in 13 states. In addition to being chief executive officer of Heidi's, Stein entered the publishing world two years ago with the magazine Sport Detroit. He believes this is the first monthly, regional sports magazine. The latest issue features female models in swimsuits photographed in the schvitz in Detroit. Although Stein is busy working in the business world with Heidi's and Sport Detroit, he says the most understated
