salami and hot dogs every
week."
Still, this is Berkeley, so the
young counterman wears an
earring, patrons are mostly
students, including many
Asians, and when they finish
eating their New York
pastrami, they go out into the
California sunshine, not
Manhattan traffic.
Finally, in a quiet residen-
tial area of Berkeley is the
Judah L. Magnes Museum,
the place that proves most
convincingly Berkeley's role
as a Jewish cultural center.
Inside, the four story man-
sion is a world of Jewish
culture, with displays of
Jewish ceremonial art,
special exhibits, and the uni-
que Western Jewish History
Center with records of Jewish
life in the West from Gold
Rush days to the present.
The third largest Jewish
museum in the nation, the
Magnes was the first to be ac-
credited by the- American
Association of Museums.
Its special exhibits on the
first floor win rave reviews
oin California art critics.
One floor above is the Jewish
ceremonial art display, which
includes ketubot from India,
illuminated manuscript art
and ceramic vases from
Jerusalem, traditional dress
from Tunisia, Torah pointers
from Poland and amulets
frbm Morocco.
Especially striking is the
gold, coral and jade five-piece
Torah set from India. This
was part of the ark in a
synagogue in Colchin, India.
In 1970, Magnes staffers went
on a special mission to Col-
chin to bring back this set
when the only synagogue re-
maining in Colchin was about
to be closed. The pieces were
carefully packed and trans-
ported and then restored to
their original beauty.
"Part of our mission is to
rescue vanishing Jewish ar-
tifacts," says Seymour
Fromer, museum director.
Besides Colchin, Magnes staf-
fers have gone on rescue mis-
sions to Egypt, Morocco and
Czechkoslovakia over the past
ten years.
The Magnes staffers, when
not on rescue missions, con-
tinue to expand the museum's
last collection, with rare
books, new art, oral history
tapes, and tapes of Jewish
music. "Jewish art, civiliza-
tion, and culture — that's our
focus," Fromer says.
And there's no better place
for that focus than in a small
California college town that's
become the capital of Jewish
culture in the Bay Area.
