Tryouts

Kelfer finally is getting his
chance after his rights were
traded from Minnesota to the
Islanders.
"We had 25 minor league
forwards signed to contracts,"
said a North Stars official.
"There is such a thing as
being in the wrong place at
the wrong time. The question
always has been about his
skating — but they said the
same thing about Pitts-
burgh's Ron Brown, and now
he's a 50-goal scorer."
Bruce Landon, general
manager for the Islanders'
AHL affiliate in Springfield,
Mass., said first-year-
professional Kelfer was eased
into the line-up. But after 11
games, Kelfer had five goals
and four assists, including a
couple of power-play goals.
"We're using him at left
wing and center," Landon
said. "He's not especially big,
but he's well-built and sticks
his nose in there. He gets
some points and creates
things.
"No, he's not a fluid skater.
But he can dart in, get the
puck and get out. So far he's
getting the job done — at this
level. Can he do it in the
NHL? It's too early to tell, but
we're very pleased with him
so far."
Veteran Steve Richmond,
from the University of
Michigan and Chicago, has
retired after seeing NHL ser-
vice with the Red Wings,
Islanders and Kings. CI
