he found spiritual quality
even in the area where guilt
and sin offerings were

peoplehood, of striving for the
elevated in life.

Parashat Terumah speaks
to us today over the bare text.
Our Soviet Jewish brothers
and sisters are coming home
to Israel. They have been
vilified, their children in-
sulted, neighbors have
shunned them, employers
have dismissed them. Many,
so long alienated from an in-
formed Jewish life, have in-
termarried. Their spouses
have gone through the same
tortures and have been mock-

ed for placing their love and
hope with their mates.
Now they are arriving in
Israel. These new im-
migrants have not observed
every mitzvah! They are not
to be found in the holy of
holies. But God is speaking to
us through this new miracle.
We must not place im-
pediments before them in
overzealous examination and
red tape as they now seek to
become part of our religion.
We must act as Klal Yis-
rael, as one people, and peti-
tion the Israeli government to
see to it that matters are ex-
pedited so that they may ar-
rive as full Jews to participate
in Israeli society as complete
contributing citizens. Let us
meet with God in the
Mishkan of Jewish identity
and hear His voice as it ad-
dresses us to be equal to to-
day's challenge! El

Avodah

Avodah Dance Group
To Appear At Beth El

The Avodah Dance Ensem-
ble will perform at Temple
Beth El 8 p.m. March 9 when
they will dance as part of the
temple's Shabbat service.
Avodah, literally translated
as "service of the heart," was
founded in 1974 by Dr. Joann
Tucker, the ensemble's ar-
tistic director and
choreographer. Tucker train-
ed at the Juillard School of
Music and studied with the
Martha Graham Studio.
The Avodah Dance Ensem-
ble seeks to interpret Jewish
themes and liturgy into the
language of dance.
During services at Beth El,
Avodah will begin with an in-
terpretation of Psalm 150.
Another piece, titled
"Sisters," is based on the
biblical account of the rela-

.

tionship between Rachel and
Leah. Avoda will portray
through dance Miriam's song,
the text of which is a counter-
point to the Mi Chamocha,
said by Moses after the cross-
ing of the Red Sea. Avodah's
performance will conclude
with a dance set to Leonard
Bernstein's arrangement of
the Kaddish.
The public is invited.
