Prices Increase
In Territories
Jerusalem (JPFS) — The
Consumer Price Index (not
including housing) rose 15.2
percent in Judea and
Samaria during 1989, as
compared to 8.5 percent in
the previous year, the Cen-
tral Bureau of Statistics an-
nounced.
Prices for consumer goods
rose in all categories except
for fruits and vegetables,
which actually fell 1.7 per-
cent. The price of sugar rose
by 69 percent, the price of
flour by 32 percent, and the
price of grains by 4 percent.
Electricity prices rose by 60
percent, fuel prices by 48
percent, and water prices by
37 percent.
In Gaza, the CPI (not in-
cluding housing) rose by 19.5
percent, compared to 10.8
percent the previous year.
Housing prices rose by 34.3
percent, and the cost of
public transportation rose by
35 percent.
The CPI (not including
housing) rose in Israel by
77.6 percent during 1989.

Is 8.9 Percent
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israelis
got good and bad economic
news this week.
Unemployment is creeping
up. But foreign trade is ris-
ing, especially electronics
exports, which reached near-
ly $2 billion in 1989, a 12.5
percent increase over 1988.
Israel's trade with Eastern
European countries is also
on an upswing. It reached
almost $250 million in 1989,
30 percent more than in
1988. Three years ago, it to-
taled $100 million.
Israel now trades with
seven Eastern European
countries.
The unemployment fig-
ures, however, are troubling,
especially in view of the in-
flux of Soviet immigrants
arriving here. The
unemployment rate rose to
8.9 percent in 1989, from 6.4
percent in 1988.
