Reform Shtil
Gets Reprieve

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Kehilat
Ramat Aviv, a Reform con-
gregation in northern Tel
Aviv, will be allowed to re-
main in its city-owned
quarters, pending an evic-
tion hearing scheduled for
May 6.
The congregation, which
belongs to the Israeli Move-
ment for Progressive
Judaism, was given oc-
cupancy of the site on a tem-
porary basis.
That was six years ago.
The municipality demanded
last month that it move im-
mediately. The congregation
obtained an injunction, after
which the city agreed to let
it stay until the court
decides.
Meanwhile, a nearby con-
gregation affiliated with the
Conservative movement
said it would consider shar-
ing a new building with the
Reform congregation.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel
has the highest number of
prisoners per capita in the
world.
Its prisons are overcrowd-
ed and are the most densely
populated, President Chaim
Herzog told the nation in his
monthly radio last week.
He said there are 150
prisoners for every 100,000
people in Israel, not in-
cluding security prisoners.
Comparable figures in
Europe range from 29 per
100,000 in Holland to 114 in
Austria.
Herzog also pointed out
that while prisoners in the
United States have an
average of 19 square yards of
space per inmate and Euro-
pean prisons average 12 to
14 square yards, prisoners in
Israel are allotted only 2 to 3
square yards.

Poland-Israel
Relations Close

Warsaw (JTA) — Poland
and Israel are expected to es-
tablish full diplomatic rela-
tions by the end of this mon-
th, after years of prepara-
tion, according to Ami Mehl,
second secretary of the
Israeli interests office in
Warsaw.
Though relations overall
are good, there is already
some friction between the
two countries, because most
of the thousands of Polish
tourists going to Israel have
stayed to work illegally.
