Yeshiva Purchases
B'nai Moshe Building

SUSAN GRANT

Staff Writer

y

eshiva Beth
Yedudah's girls'
school and pre-school
program will soon have a
new home.
The yeshiva plans to pur-
chase the former Congrega-
tion B'nai Moshe building on
Church and Ten Mile roads
in Oak Park. United Jewish
Charities recently bought
the building from the con-
gregation for $1.6 million.
Jewish Welfare Federation
President Mark Schlussel
said the yeshiva will lease
the facility for an undeter-
mined number of years with
all the rights and respon-
sibilities of ownership and
then purchase the building.
Although it is technically
a lease, the yeshiva will own
the property, he said. He did
not reveal the purchase
price.
While the agreement is
still tentative, Schlussel ex-
pects to receive a letter of in-
tent from the yeshiva by ear-
ly next week confirming the
deal.
Yeshiva Executive Vice
President Norman Kahn
said he plans to begin reno-
vations at B'nai Moshe this
spring.
Yeshiva Administrative
Director Rabbi E.B. Freed-
man said his goal is to move
the Sally Allan Alexander
Beth Jacob School for Girls
and the pre-school program
into the synagogue building
on Sept. 1. Rabbi Freedman
estimates 400 students will
be affected by the move.
The girls' school, which is
near Lasher and 14 Mile
roads in Beverly Hills, will
be rented and eventually
>
sold, Rabbi Freedman said.
Plans to build a $1 million
addition to the Joseph
Tanenbaum School for Boys
on Lincoln in Southfield
have been scrapped, he said.
A renovation project to
repair the roof and add land-
scaping will continue.
The expansion would have
eased overcrowding at the
facility. But moving the pre-
school program from the
boys' school to the B'nai
Moshe facility will give the
students more space.
Seymour Mandell, the
yeshiva's architect, is work-
ing on plans to turn the
B'nai Moshe facility into a
school.
Renovation plans include
converting the main sanc-
tuary into six classrooms,

Mandell said. The facility al-
ready has 10 classrooms, a
library and a multi-purpose
room.
Mandell expects the reno-
vation at the B'nai Moshe
building and the boys' school
to cost about $1 million.
Rabbi Freedman said some
of those funds have already
been raised. Rabbi Freed-
man believes the move will
be good for the school and
the community. No longer
will students have to spend
up to an hour a day com-
muting to Beth Jacob from
Southfield or Oak Park, he
said. Despite subsidies from
the yeshiva, some parents
spend up to $600 a year for
each child to be bused to
school.
He calls the school's move
"a major commitment on the
yeshiva's part to the 10 Mile
and Greenfield Road area."
It's better for the commun-
ity to see a building filled
with school children six days
a week than an empty facili-
ty, Rabbi Freedman added.
Schlussel said the
yeshiva's move "is good for
them. It's good for the Jew-
ish community."
Federation officials felt the
yeshiva needed the facility
more than Temple Emanu-
El, whose leaders also ex-
pressed interest in the B'nai
Moshe site, he said.
"It was not a competition,"
Schussel said. Although
Temple Emanu-El needs
room for its Sunday school
classes, Federation officials
felt the yeshiva would use
the entire building and the
move-in date better fit the
Federation's time line.
Jack Nolish, Temple
Emanu-El's president, said
he could not comment on the
sale because he did not know
about it.
Schussel said, Federation
purchased the B'nai Moshe
building because it wanted
the building retained in
Jewish hands. Selling it to
the yeshiva was the "best
option for what we want-
ed." ❑
