THE STATE OF THE ARTS riage and graduation docu- ments and birth certificates, because "we don't care for Israeli birth certificates." Soon, the Palestinians will issue their own identifica- tion cards. "And when any Israeli will stop me I will show him my Palestinian ID card — not an Israeli ID card." Awad envisions a Palestin- ian state in the West Bank and Gaza, with Jerusalem as an open city. Palestinians already are working with the Japanese to design a train to connect the two ter- ritories, he said. The new Palestinian state, unlike Israel, would be a real democracy welcoming Muslims, Christians and even Jewish settlers now liv- ing in the territories, he said. Two years ago Awad said in an interview with Tikkun magazine that all settlers should be forced to return to Israel. "They came and stole the land. They are invaders. They came as prostitutes," he said. Awad said his revised opi- nion about the settlers ) reflects the new Palestinian attitude brought about by the intifada. "That's the new Palestin- ian you are seeing. And believe me, it's scary." Awad, who after his expul- sion said he might convert to Judaism or hop on a plane so he could be in Israel, no longer has plans to return to the Jewish state. Instead, he said, he is focusing all his energy on bringing peace to the Middle East. Everyone must realize that when an Israeli or a Pa- lestinian woman weeps over the body of her dead child, "It's the same crying, the same tears. "The time has to come when a Palestinian has no choice but to cry when an Israeli child dies, and when an Israeli has to cry when a Palestinian child dies." 0 IDF Major jailed For Refusing To Serve Tel Aviv (JTA) — An Israel Defense Force major was sentenced last week to 25 days in military prison for refusing to serve in the ad- ministered territories.
