PAIN RELIEF OINTMENT

THE ONLY FORMULA CONTAINING THE 30 MINERALS FROM THE WORLD FAMOUS
MEDICAL MINERAL SPRINGS OF MT. CLEMENS, MICH.

was able to raise about
$300,000 to offset its deficit.
Present Tense has had little
success at fund-raising.
In the last few months, ac-
cording to some sources,
there have been preliminary
discussions about merging
Present Tense, with another
magazine, notably Moment,
the national Jewish maga-
zine which is independently
published in Washington.
Hershel Shanks, publisher
of Moment, acknowledged
these talks, but said he had
"no idea when something
may solidify" from them.
Since Committee's
restructure has been an-
nounced, there has also been
talk of a merger between
Present Tense and Tikkun.
The independently publish-
ed Tikkun, which is based in
Oakland, Ca., was founded
three-and-a-half years ago. It
now has a circulation of
40,000 and is widely
perceived as a more liberal
gadfly to the Jewish estab-
lishment than Present Tense
has been.
According to Tikkun editor
Michael Lerner, there have
been tentative discussions
between him and Comay
about the possibility of
Tikkunfulfilling Present
Tense's subscription obliga-
tions to its 6,000 paying
subscribers. (Committee's
22,000 members receive the
magazine for free).
Tikkunwould also print Pre-
sent Tense's columnists and,
if Committee can raise the
funds, Murray Polner, the
editor of Present Tense,
would become Tikkun's East
Coast editor, a position that
does not now exist.
"Unfortunately," said
Shanks, "every Jewish
magazine runs at a loss.
Somebody's got to take up
the loss. That's a fact of life
of Jewish journalism."
Adam Simms, publisher of
Present Tense, felt the
magazine's demise may
have been motivated by
politics. He told the New
York Times that an article
highly critical of the Con-
ference of Presidents of
Major American Jewish
Organizations in the maga-
zine's current issue "might
have been the straw that
broke the camel's back."
This charge, said Comay,
"is not true and almost ir-
relevant. No one at the
[board of governors']
meeting had seen the article.
I found it in my mailbox
when I got home." ❑

The world famous minerals of
Mt. Clemens, Michigan are
now part of an effective pain
relief formula. The water and
minerals are used as an emul-
sion to carry and dispense the
formula when applied. Ache-
away is the only pain relief rub
containing water and min-
erals from Mount Clemens
Artesian Springs.
