Joel watches as Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg helps Dimitry with his tefillin.

Jewish heritage by the com-
munists. They know there is
something that they are miss-
ing, and we are trying to
teach and introduce them to
it. The Russians who came
here 10 years ago assimilated
into the American culture
and have little ties to things
Jewish. We want these new
families to feel that the
Jewish address is a warm
one."

Rabbi Goldberg said
Dimitry is very interested in
his studies and that even
language barriers are bridg-
ed quickly when there is that
much enthusiasm.
Dimitry said the hardest
thing about moving to the
U.S. was learning English.
His favorite thing is bowling.
Following one Shabbat that
Dimitry spent with the Kirz-
ners, the two families piled in-
to two vans, made a stop at
the kosher Dunkin' Donuts
and then spent the evening
bowling.
Joel said he and Dimitry
"get along pretty good,
especially with our dog, Sun-
burst. We like hockey, basket-
ball, bowling and playing

Sega and Nintendo." Joel has
the Sega game. Dimitry was
given Nintendo last year
after his brit milah.
In his bar mitzvah speech
Joel will say, "I see my corn-
ing to be a bar mitzvah not
only as a way to raise myself
to a higher level of holiness,
but to bring that level of
holiness into the things I do
every day — to reach up, to
reach inside, and to reach out
is my lifelong responsibility.
Being able to share my bar
mitzvah with Dimitry has
given me an opportunity to
reach out and take these first
steps."
And the families are
already looking beyond this
joyous weekend to Purim and
Passover. "It is enlivening our
own Jewish experience, see-
ing this through the Zelid-
mans' eyes," said Jerry Kirz-
ner. "We can't wait to in-
troduce them to Purim. And
our family has always set
aside a plate to remember
Soviet Jews at the Passover
seder. Pesach this year is go-
ing to be very special." ❑
