Iphigene Sulzberger
(JTA) — Iphigene Ochs
Sulzberger, matriarch of the
family that has owned the
New York Times since 1896
and granddaughter of Rabbi
Isaac Meyer Wise of Cincin-
nati, the founder of American
Reform Judaism, died at her
home in Stamford, Conn., on
Feb. 27. She was 97.
Her heritage was that of the
enterprising Jews of German
origin, who came to the
United States in the early
and mid-19th century to
make their mark and achieve
fame in merchandising, in-
dustry, finance and
publishing.
Iphigene Ochs was born in
Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1892,
the only child of Adolf Ochs
and Iphigenia Wise Ochs. Her
father was proprietor of the
Chattanooga Times, a leading
newspaper in Tennessee.
Ochs bought the then
faltering New York Times in
1896 and moved his family to
New York, where Iphigene,
known to her family as "Iffy,"
was educated at home and
later at private schools.
She enrolled at Barnard
College in 1910 and was ac-
tive at the Henry Street Set-
tlement and in the Jewish
Big Sisters program.
While a college student, she
met Arthur Hays Sulzberger,
son of a cotton merchant.
Later they met again when
he was a lieutenant in the
U.S. Army. They were mar-
ried in 1917.
Sulzberger became presi-
dent and publisher of the
Times in 1935, a position he
bestowed on his son-in-law
Orvil Dryfoos in 1957.
Iphigene Sulzberger was ac-
tive in philanthropy
throughout her life, serving
at various times as trustee of
the Hebrew Union College-
Jewish Institute of Religion,
the Reform seminary which
gave her an honorary Doc-
torate of Humane Letters.
The Sulzbergers had four
children, 13 grandchildren
and 24 great-grandchildren.
