Send a gift subscription to Special to The Jewish News A single Jew traveling abroad on business, armed with a com- puterized list of unattached Jews at his destination, complete with details of so- cial events and invitations for Shabbat meals, is not just a remote picture of an idealized future. When Dr. Motti Fried- man's "Tandu" World Jew- ish Singles Club establishes its planned computer net- work, that picture will become a reality. Tandu ("together" in Heb- rew), founded by Friedman three years ago, already has a mailing list of several thousand names of single Jews all over the world, in- cluding those from the major communities in the United States and Europe as well as tiny ones such as Cyprus and Puerto Rico. Friedman, 44, an Israeli who received his doctorate in organizational behavior at Columbia University and who is himself single, is acutely aware of the plight of Jewish singles — espe- cially those with successful careers which involve mobility — who want an ac- tive social life while remain- ing Jewish. Most local communities, he maintains, cater mainly for couples, and Tandu, which is a non-profit organ- ization, aims to fill that vac- uum. Tandu will soon be bring- in g out a bimonthly newsletter to strengthen the contacts between its mem- bers, informing them of spe- cial activities for Jewish singles worldwide. But Friedman's main efforts are now directed to organizing the first Jewish Singles Conference, planned for this summer in Jerusalem. He hopes it will bring some 500 people from abroad to join a similar number of Israelis. He plans to conduct workshops on the problems of being a single Jew, discus- sions on Jewish demography and the dangers of assimila- tion, and the effects of late marriages and small families. Friedman, who recently traveled to the Soviet Union, met with singles there who are anxious to strengthen their Jewish identity and make contact with Jews in the West. Friedman also hopes that the conference will give Jew- ish singles an opportunity to see Israel as a possible home. He has made plans for home hospitality, to be organized by the Israel Forum, an organization which pro- motes successful absorption of immigrants by "adopting" olim and guiding them through bureaucracy and the difficulties of their first months in Israel. Friedman is on the board of the 500-member Forum and is himself in close con- tact with a Yugoslav immi- grant family. Meanwhile, Friedman is lobbying for the rights of singles inside Israel. He is trying to extend the time limit for immigrant rights for single olim, and he is also active in changing pension conditions for war widows, which at present discourage remarriage. But for Friedman, and Tandu, Jewish survival is the first priority. Jewish singles are lonely people, he says, and there is a real need for contact. Eventually, Tandu hopes to raise the awareness of Jewish organ- izations all over the world to the needs of singles, and to supply them with educa- tional programs and unique activities to bring Jewish singles together. ❑ Margolis Speaks At Oneg Shabbat Television newscaster, Sherry Margolis, will speak at an Oneg Shabbat folowing an 8 p.m. service for young adults March 2 at Adat Shalom Synagogue.
