BACKGROUND: Hope Schechter
Silverman grew up in Detroit, attending
Winship Elementary School and
Mumford High School. Her father, Joe
Schechter, owned Frank's shoe store on
Gratiot and Van Dyke. Her mother,
Dorothy, worked in the executive offices
of Borman Foods for 25 years and was
an active volunteer with Sinai Hospital
and B'nai B'rith. "This was something
(volunteer work) that I did see, and I do
think you learn from example?' says
Silverman.
Silverman attended the Temple Beth
El nursery school and has been a
temple member for over 40 years.
During high school she was enrolled in
the Mumford co-op program. After
graduation she became a bookkeeper for
Irving Moskovitsky, a plumber.
Silverman's grandmother, Clara
Birnbaum, introduced her to Gene
Silverman. Birnbaum orchestrated the
couple's meeting by taking her
granddaughter along to meet a
prospective tenant of her building. The
couple were married five months later.
While Silverman was raising her
daughters, she met Sonia Macey when
she was at the beauty parlor. Macey
enlisted her help in the new Meals on
Wheels program. "I started with the
National Council of Jewish Women 17
years ago, and I've been active ever
since," says Silverman.
-She was among the first drivers in
the Meals on Wheels program, serving
13 clients. Today the program serves
over 200 and Silverman is still active.
She even recruited her retired parents •
to become drivers.
In 1985, Silverman helped propose a
volunteer program for Sinai's perinatal
nursing department to help feed
newborns. After the project was
developed, she became chairman and
now oversees 30 volunteers. Silverman
represented the Sinai nursery
volunteers in the Time to Care WDIV-
TV campaign.
She also volunteers her time with
the Orchard's Children Services, the Ted
Schwartz Day Camp, Northwest Child
