A Local Podaitrist
Gets Both Feet In It
DANNY RASKIN
Local Columnist
S
kiing is closest to his
heart . . . but very ex-
pensive because Dr.
Jerry Levine's wife, Gloria,
doesn't ski . . . He's on the
slopes almost every weekend
during winter, while she does
a lot of shopping . . . They
look for couples like them .. .
and while the men do their
slaloming, the gals take off for
stores . . . But in all fairness
to Gloria, she and another
lass maybe do much of other
things too, like taking in art
shows . . . which also can
become quite costly if Gloria
sees something she likes.
However, Jerry doesn't
mind . . . just as long as he
can ski in the winter and run
in the summer (Boston
Marathon, New York
Marathon, Free Press
Marathon, etc.).
As a podiatrist, Jerry takes
care of whatever foot pro-
blems the Detroit Pistons
may have and speaks before
as many of the 38 ski clubs of
Metropolitan Detroit Ski
Club as possible on the new
ski orthotic he has come up
with.
They're the newest and hot-
test thing in the sports equip-
ment world . . . plastic inserts
for ski boots especially mold-
ed to an individual's feet .. .
and available through most
podiatrists.
IMAGINE BEING the top
cat among 275 girls from six
states? . . . That's the purring
of Debbie Wein of Galilee
Chapter, who took top in-
dividual honors in recent
B'nai B'rith Women Trio
Regional Bowling Association
tournament at St. Paul,
Minn. . . . Her winning six-
game series among the 55 or
more teams competing was a
whopping 1121 . . . Debbie's
high game was 244 and high
series 616.
NICK AND MARILYN
Gonte were honored by about
120 through Sophie and
Harry Hoffman Chapter, Ci-
ty of Hope, during the group's
second annual Natalie Eps-
tein Award Dinner . . . Nick
and Marilyn, a wonderful
couple, were saluted for their
nine years of devoted service
to City of Hope . . . Those who
know Nick and Marilyn
recognize them for their
many friendly and warm
humanistic endeavors.
COSTUMES FROM
Shakespearean plays plus
Guys 'n Dolls, the Heiress,
Amadeus, etc., 1400 to 1960s,
is set for the trunk show of
period costumes, March 5, 12
noon, of Sisterhood of Temple
Beth El . . . with program be-
ing put on by Meadowbrook
Theatre Guild.
Lucy Gersten is coor-
dinating for the Temple gals
and Julie Glynn for
Meadowbrook Guild . . .
Reservations must be in by
Feb. 26.
PREMIER SOCIAL event
by Michigan Opera Theatre is
May 5 at the first black-tie
shindig in soon-to-be-opened
Grand Ballroom of Ritz-
Carlton, Dearborn . . . It's
MOT's 4th annual Opera Ball
and will launch the second
production of the company's
Spring Grand Opera Series at
Masonic Temple with Verdi's
La Traviata, May 5-12.
DON'T GET YOUR tux
dirty, men . . . Next night
(May 6) is black tie Celebrity
Ball by Variety Club of
Skiing and a new
orthotic offset the
shopping.
Detroit at Westin Hotel .. .
with honorees, Broadway
show theme entertainment
and dancing to Johnny
Trudell.
STILL CAN'T understand
why the law isn't enforced
about people parking illegal-
ly in places reserved for the
handicapped . . . At local
shopping center recently,
folks parked there wantonly
. . . in complete disregard for
the law.
CONGRATS . . . to Lou
Panush . . . on his 80th
birthday.
LOOKING BACK On Col-
umns of Yesteryears .. .
July 15, 1977 . . . "Sonny
Eliot, WWJ-TV weather-
caster, has an enemy . . . It's
6-year-old Lisa Kirman,
daughter of Marsha and Al
Kirman . . . Lisa blames the
100-degree weather we had
last week on Sonny . . . The
Kirmans were here visiting
from Florida, where they
reside . . . and she was excited
because coming to Detroit,
Lisa through there would be
snow . . . which she has never
seen . . . Sonny told how hot
it was going to be and Lisa
thinks he's a 'very bad bad
man.' "
Nov. 4, 1977 . . . "Marcie
Goldstein, daughter of Ethel
and Irving Goldstein, is the
girl walking in the rain via
TV's new Dristan commercial
made in New York and being
shown hereabouts." El
