Working with 1-2 1/2-year- old-children, Schatz plays guitar, sings and presents finger plays and dramatic plays. "My favorite activity is when I bring a magic box to class," she said. "It's invisi- ble. I'll take things out of the box that they can't see, allowing them to use their imagination at a very early age. And they're all into it now. We'll pretend there's a cat in the box, and they go around petting the cat." In addition to directing the group of 100 children, Schatz leads art activities, teaching the boys and girls to paint with chocolate pudding and applesauce and make play dough out of peanut butter and powdered milk.
