HIGH YIELD & INSTANT LIQUIDITY Rivera, pictures of his broken nose later splashed across the front pages of supermarket tabloids, had invited Levy and several skinheads to appear on the program "Geraldo." A fight ensued and a chair was smashed across Rivera's face. Levy, who in 1984 told Idaho Jews they should shoot to kill if the Church of Jesus Christ Christian (Aryan Nations) attacked their synagogues, insists he does not support violence, just self-defense. As to whether his words and actions might not incite violence, Levy says only, "Sometimes you have to make trouble to stop trouble" and "we'll do anything to save Jewish lives. "Would it have been moral to kill Hitler? Any Jew with common sense knows the answer." Levy's pronouncement that he would bring "50 tough Jews" for a "death to the Klan rally" in Trenton, N.J., in the mid-1980s is an example of his approach to self-defense. He said he was "predicting violence, not in- citing it," should the KKK hold a proposed political ral- ly. As in previous cases when his warnings cancelled scheduled KKK demonstra- tions, Levy won out in Tren- ton. New Jersey KICK leader Richard Bondira said he decided not to hold the rally when he learned of "a lunatic fringe that is trying to turn this Trenton rally into a bloodbath." He told a Trenton paper that JDO members are "low IQ, sub- Neanderthal types." Levy, who says the JDO is funded through donations, many of which come from Holocaust survivors, be- lieves many of the Jews who don't support him simply don't know him. "Not all Jews agree with us . . . yet," he says. Usually, he begins by tell- ing the unenlightened about the JDO's work defending synagogues. "First you get them to agree to our pur- pose; next you get them in- volved," he says. Levy, whose heroes were the men and women of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, plans to start more JDO chapters across the country. "When most Jews are hit they ask, 'What did I do to deserve this?"' Levy says. "That's why we're different. When we're hit, we hit back. There's a new Jew in town." ❑ 7.65 %E. 0 %* 7 RATE Clawson 435-2840 330 W. '14 Mile Rd.
