The various parties,
however, can't wait for
Sharansky to come out of the
political closet. They urgent-
ly require spokesmen to br-
ing their message to Russian
newcomers who, unlike
emigrants to the U.S., are
automatically granted
citizenship and the right to
vote. Thus, every plane load
of Soviet Jews that lands at
Ben-Gurion Airport is filled
with voters who will
significantly influence
Israeli political life. ❑

Cost Of Living
Rises In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
cost-of-living index rose by
1.1 percent in January, the
Central Bureau of Statistics
announced.
The increase, the same as
in December, was slightly
higher than the original pro-
jection for January of "under
1 percent." The average
Israeli family now requires a
monthly income of about
$1,500 to break even.
Economists expect the
February price index to
show a higher increase when
it is announced on March 15.
It will reflect price increases
the Finance Ministry had
planned to introduce in
January, but postponed to
give the public a breathing
spell.
Nevertheless, economists
are projecting a lower an-
nual inflation rate in 1990.
They say it will be just under
20 percent, compared to 21.7
percent in 1989.
Finance Minister Shimon
Peres, whose goal is single-
digit inflation, warned that
this year's inflation will de-
pend largely on budgetary
adjustments that will have
to be made if the anticipated
large-scale immigration ma-
terializes.

Israeli Tourism
Rebounds

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Tourism
to Israel was up 5 percent
last month over January
1989, but still short of the
pre- intifada high.
A total of 90,000 tourists
visited Israel in January
1990, 4 percent fewer than
in January 1987, the start of
a record year for Israeli
tourism.
There were 1.5 million
visitors in 1987. The Pales-
tinian uprising began on
Dec. 9 of that year, and soon
after, tourism took a sharp
dip. It has recovered slowly
in the past year.
