should they advertise? "Yes,
sure," Berman responds.
"There are men out there
seeking companionship.
"I have a guy in his 80s
who answers and places ads.
There's no age limit."
There are some other
kinds of limits, however. Ads
from non-Jews are not know-
ingly accepted because "the
intent and purpose of the
column is to help Jewish
singles connect with other
Jewish singles," she ex-
plains.
Of course, ads must be in
good taste. And advertisers
are never revealed.
"One gal said she had re-
sponded to an ad but was
busy when the man called
her and she asked him to call
her back. She was sure he
lost her number because he
didn't call back — could she

have his name and
number?" Berman recalls.
"I told her we do not do that.
We do not give out names or
phone numbers (of adver-
tisers). That is strictly con-
fidential and up to the in-
dividual. I told her to answer
his ad again, saying she
misplaced his number and
would he please respond
again?"
The mechanics of getting
into the People Connector
are simple: potential adver-
tisers send in their ads — 30
words maximum — with
their $5 check and Berman
assigns each a number. Ads
received by Friday noon are
published the following Fri-
day.
And every word of an ad is
counted, she said. "If it's 31
words, we'll edit it, if possi-
ble, or we'll return it to the
sender for re-wording."
Those answering the _ads
place the ad's number in the
lower lefthand corner of a
response envelope and send
it, with $1, in a larger
envelope to The Jewish
News. Berman forwards the
responses, without opening
them, within two days.
For those who take a little
longer to respond, Berman
keeps the ads four months.
"I love this column," said
Berman. "It's so much fun. I
get this great feeling
whenever I get ads or re-
sponses.
"I feel like a silent shad-
chen. Whenever I hear about
people making the connec-

tion, I get on a 'high' like
you wouldn't believe. I feel
like I played a part in bring-
ing Jewish people together."
Her only regret, she said,
is not hearing often enough
from advertisers and re-
spondents. "I wish they'd
give me more feedback when
they do connect. I'd love to
hear from them."
