would be no pogroms in
Moscow. In a rare appeal for
calm carried by the Tass
news agency, the KGB said
that rumors of an impending
full-scale pogrom were
groundless. At the same
time, however, the state-
ment noted that the KGB
had taken measures "to pro-
tect all Soviet citizens."
Some Moscow Jews have
already experienced mob
violence when right-wing
Russian nationalists chan-
ting anti-Semitic slogans
disrupted a meeting at the
liberal House of Writers in
Moscow last month and beat
up a number of its members
to the chilling chant, "Kill
the Jews."
In Leningrad, the threat to
Jews has been equally
sinister and explicit:
Leaflets calling for Russians
to physically attack Jews on
May 5 are currently being
circulated, and the influen-
tial weekly, Literaturnaya
Gazeta, last week reported
that its offices were flooded
with calls from concerned
readers.
The KGB has blamed the
current climate of fear on
unnamed groups and
"hooligans," but it is widely
believed that these unnamed
groups are a concoction of
Russian ultra-nationalist
organizations, which were
given new life by glasnost
and now are vying for atten-
tion and support.
While Russia rejoices in a

host of such nationalist
groups, the most prominent
of which is Pamyat
("Memory"), the common
denominator — and the sin-
gle most potent unifying
force — is anti-Semitism.
"The Chosen People take
the sweets and the cream
from the communal pie, giv-
ing the crust to their ac-
complices, the mercenary
dealers of the non-Jews,"
declared one recent Pamyat
pamphlet which was cir-
culated in Moscow and Len-
ingrad. "Kneading the
dough, baking the pie and
standing by the stove are the
despised Russians, whom
the Jewish God . . . gave a
human form only so that the
Jews should find it pleasant
to be served by them."
Pamyat members wear
black uniforms and the
Pamyat manifesto, which
implicitly blames Jews for
the murder of Czar Nicholas,
calls for the renewal of eter-
nal Russia, "which has been
tortured and robbed by ag-
gressive Zionism, Talmudic
atheism and cosmopolitan
usury."
This month, three nation-
alist groups described the
pogrom rumors as the work
of "Zionist enemies" who
were aiming to discredit the
nationalists and spread
"Russophobia."
The man who invented the
term "Russophobia" is Igor
Shafarevich, a mathemati-
cian who is regarded by
many nationalists today as
the respository and guardian
of Russian tradition.
Asked in an interview
with Newsweek magazine
last week whether he was, in
fact, an anti-Semite,
Shafarevich replied dis-
ingenuously: "I used to be
accused of anti-Sovietism,
now it's anti-Semitism. I
don't really understand
either term. They're vague
and propagandistic."
One man who does not
underestimate the current
threat to Soviet Jews is the
best-known Soviet Jew of all,
Natan Sharansky.
"Pogrom," he says
categorically, "is in the air.
One of the peculiarities was
that under totalitarianism,
pogroms were not permitted
because they would be a
threat to the regime itself.
Still, all the time, people
were fed 'anti-Zionist' pro-
paganda, and for genera-
tions the Jews were thought
of as some Masonic sect with
ambitions to rule the world."
