Editor's note: Jewish Fami-
ly Service provides the Detroit
community with counseling
for families and troubled in-
dividuals and food and
clothing for the needy and
assisting in the resettlement of
Soviet Jews. One of its more
successful programs is its
volunteer service, which helps
the elderly with "Friendly
Visitors" and "Friendly Shop-
pers." JFS receives funding
from the Jewish Welfare
Federation's Allied Jewish
Campaign, now under way
throughout the Detroit area.
After having her second
child nine months ago, Deb-
bie Lipson decided there was
still time in her busy
schedule to help others in
need. Belle Maslowe, widowed
four years and unable to drive
due to poor vision, needed a
friend.
The two were a perfect
match.
Through Jewish Family
Service's "Friendly Shopper"
volunteer program, Debbie
and Belle were brought
together, and a marvelous
mother-daughter-like rela-
tionship was born.
Debbie works three days a
week at a local advertising
agency. Despite caring for her
two children — Mark, 4, and
Kevin, 9 months — she still
felt the desire to reach out
and help.
"It makes me happy to do

nice things for people," the
West Bloomfield resident
said. "I don't work every day,
and I figured I could do
something constructive on my
days off."
What Debbie does, official-
ly, is call Belle every other
Sunday to get her shopping
list. Come Monday, Debbie
goes to the market and picks
up Belle's groceries and
delivers them to her home.
"When I see her carrying
all those heavy groceries and
her little son, I wonder how
she does it," Belle said. "She's
a wonderful person. She's just
like my adopted daughter."
But, then, there is the
"unofficial" part.
After shopping, the two
often sit down and talk. The
discussions range from social
issues fo men.
"I just ask her about
everything," Belle said. "She
gives me advice on what's
really going on out there. I
was always on the go, and I'm
not used to being hemmed in
like I am. I used to sing with
the Michigan Opera Corn-
pany and play the flute .. .
music was my life."
Belle has a son, a professor
at McGill University in Mon-
treal, and a daughter who
lives on the east side of
Detroit. So Debbie's visits and
friendship mean a great deal
to her.
"I recently had a birthday,
and she sent me these lovely
flowers . . . it was so wonder-
ful," Belle said. E
