FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1990

Norman T. Roman.
Temple Kol

In her letter Feb. 2, the New
Jewish Agenda chairman
pleads for the right to be
critical of Israel, ignoring her
own name-calling (fascists) of
those who support the State
of Israel. This is an affront to
myself as well as the vast ma-
jority of the Detroit Jewish
community who support
Jewish life and the State of
Israel.
The Agenda policy is a con-
stant vocal and written
criticism of the State of Israel
while whitewashing the PLO
with their silence. Recently,
at an Agenda meeting, one of
their members proclaimed,
"Today I am a PLO Arab,"
following a visit with Arafat.
The Agenda membership rose
to cheer this proclamation.
It is obvious that the New
Jewish Agenda acts as a fifth
column in this community. It
undermines the organized,
responsible Jewish commu-
nity as well as the State of
Israel with double talk and
constant criticism.

her interest in other rab-
binical roles.)"
Those who know me and
know of my relationship with
her, are aware of the respect
and total confidence I place in
her abilities (present and
future) as a rabbinical col-
league. We have spoken often
of how nice it would be to
work as rabbis together in the
same community.
I know that many members
of Temples Emanu-El and
Shir Shalom, where she has
interned and conducted wor-
ship services, and the
students of MSTY, whom she
has served as rabbinic faculty,
have been as inspired as I by
Amy Bigman's poise, per-
sonality, and future in the
rabbinate.

Are Only Orthodox
Jews Observant?

The Feb. 16 issue of The
Jewish News had a Close-Up
on the front page called "An
Unorthodox Approach."
I take issue with your
choice of words when you
describe Mark Schlussel as
"the first observant Jew to
become president of JWF."
Later on, I find that Schlussel
is Orthodox. Are only Or-
thodox Jews observant? It's
possible for Reform and Con-
servative Jews to be equally
observant. Also, an implied
connotation is that previous

presidents of JWF were not
observant.
At a time when the Or-
thodox wing of Judaism con-
tinues to advocate
divisiveness inside of the
Jewish community and
refuses to admit that there
could be "observant" Conser-
vative or Reform Jews, your
article continues this line of
reasoning.
I would hope that The
Jewish News supports unity
rather than separation
among the three branches of
Judaism.

AJCongress
Position

An unfortunate headline
("Split Between Jewish
Groups Threatens Major Civil
Rights Bill") over James
Besser's report (Feb. 9) on the
disagreements within the
Jewish community over cer-
tain aspects of the Civil
Rights Act of 1990 might
mislead your readers. The
headline might lead them to
conclude that the American
Jewish Congress' support for
the civil rights bill is condi-
tioned upon the coalition's ac-
ceptance of our proposal to
add protections for religious-
ly observant employees to the
bill.
AJCongress, together with
other Jewish and non-Jewish
organizations, unconditional-
ly supports the Civil Rights
Act of 1990. The bill is a
necessary corrective to a
series of Supreme Court deci-
sions which make it too dif-
ficult to prove and remedy
discrimination.
We do disagree with some
other Jewish groups over the
question of whether protec-
tions for religious workers
should be addressed in the
omnibus civil rights bill or in
a free-standing bill. We think
that a bill which addresses
such a broad range of civil
rights issues — seniority,
nature of employer defenses,
punitive and compensatory
damages, reverse discrimina-
tion suits, jury trials, statutes
of limitations and attorneys',
fees — can without difficulty
include protection for the
rights of religious employees.
We think it plain, as well,
that the inclusion of our pro-
posal will in no way hamper
the bill's passage. And we
think that Jewish groups
should not be hesitant, as
some are, to insist that protec-
tions for the rights of Jews are
as essential to the protection
of civil rights as any other
provision of Title VII.
